Watching the 2012 London Summer Olympics we’ve been inspired – and stunned – by the precision performances of the athletes. 16-year-old gymnast Gaby Douglas jumping, tumbling, flying and twirling her way to the women’s gold. Michael Phelps breaking world swimming records by fractions of a second again and again!
We sit in front of our tv’s wondering, How do they do it? Apart from their extraordinary level of commitment to their sport and rigorous practice, what is these athletes’ secret to success?
After the Beijing Olympics in 2008, Michael Phelps said in an interview, “Nothing is impossible. With so many people saying it couldn’t be done, all it takes is an imagination, and that’s something I learned and something that helped me.”
He was speaking, of course, about the power of visualization.
I first heard about this technique back in the ’80’s when a friend recommended I read Shakti Gawain’s “Creative Visualization”. This classic little book (I love thin books packed with good ideas!) taught me how to use my imagination to create mental images of what I wanted in life… and it really worked!
Oprah agrees. She says, “I do believe, and I have seen in my own life, that Creative Visualization works.”
But creative visualization isn’t only for Olympians, celebrities and certain other “special people.” Anyone can learn and master this tool once you have the know-how.
It’s really very simple:
First you imagine in your mind’s eye what your dreams and goals are, in any area of life that’s important to you: health, relationship, career, finances, creativity, etc.
Next, you use the energy of your emotions to ignite the manifestation of what you really desire.
Finally, you take the specific actions that will make it happen.
An example of when this worked exceptionally well for me was with our recent move to a new home. The old place was comfortable and modern and located in a trendy area of town. However, the traffic noise and activity in the alley after the nearby bars closed down was keeping me awake at night, causing me considerable stress!
So I got to work visualizing the perfect place for us to live: near the park, shopping and beach; dog-friendly; a little more spacious; in-suite laundry (a must!), a large patio and most of all peace and quiet… a place where we would feel comfortable, happy and truly at home. We started our search with a realtor on a Wednesday. By Saturday we had found our dream home, with all the details I’d imagined – and more! We placed a low-ball offer that was accepted and moved in a month ago. The whole process couldn’t have been easier.
I’ve also had success over the years using visualization in landing overseas teaching jobs, creating my own coaching/healing practice, finding my Soulmate – and even planning the 1001 details of our wedding that, in the end, went without a hitch.
You see, the key to manifesting your heart’s desires is knowing what you want and believing it’s possible. With that strong belief in place you can then generate the emotional energy that will move you towards your goal. The word “e-motion” really means “energy in motion”. When you combine belief with feeling, a magical things happens: powerful openings for action begin to appear and you know what to DO next to make your dreams happen in reality.
All the tools you need to visualize your relationships, career, financial abundance and happiness already exist inside you. Your job is simply to discover and make the most of them by using them on a consistent basis. You’re the one who can make or break your success in life. Trust yourself and go for it!
